Introduction
Several studies suggest that drinking alkaline water may provide multiple health benefits. Research indicates potential positive effects on metabolism, digestion, hydration, longevity, and skin health.
Effects on Metabolic Health
Studies in animal models show that consuming alkaline ionized water may reduce blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. It has also been observed to improve metabolic function by lowering free radical production. Additionally, alkaline water may help protect pancreatic beta cells from oxidative damage.
Research further suggests that alkaline water can slow weight gain in obese mice by helping regulate cholesterol balance.
Benefits for Kidney and Urinary Health
In patients with end-stage renal disease, alkaline water has been shown to reduce certain side effects of hemodialysis, including excessive free radical generation.
In cases of urinary bladder stones, alkaline water may accelerate melamine excretion. This helps prevent its accumulation in the bladder and may improve related pathological conditions.
Digestive and Acid Reflux Support
Due to its higher pH, alkaline water can help neutralize stomach acid. This property may make it beneficial for gastrointestinal issues such as gastric hyperacidity and diarrhea.
Studies also suggest that alkaline water can inactivate pepsin, an enzyme involved in acid reflux. This effect may help alleviate symptoms of laryngopharyngeal and gastroesophageal reflux diseases.
Hydration and Exercise Performance
In healthy adults experiencing exercise-induced dehydration, electrolyzed alkaline water has been shown to reduce high-shear blood viscosity. This indicates improved blood flow and hydration efficiency.
Longevity and Survival
Animal studies indicate that regular consumption of alkaline water may promote longevity. Mice given alkaline water demonstrated higher survival rates compared to those consuming regular water.
Skin Health Benefits
Beyond drinking, bathing in alkaline water may also support skin health. Studies in mice show reduced UV-induced skin damage when bathed in alkaline water. This effect is linked to maintaining a healthy balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines.
